The prequel duels were ass, lightsaber fights have been getting more stupid ever since the original trilogy which was the only time the fights looked semi-realistic, in the prequels the jedi just do pointless twirls and unrealistic flashy moves that make no sense and looks more like choregraphed dance routines. Trained Jedi getting tired of swinging an almost weightless lightsaber handle is stupid and not a complement in any way to the new movies, these are supposed to be trained warriors, them getting tired after swinging nothing but a handle for five minutes is idiotic.

The prequels were criticized for being overchoreographed, looking more like a dance rather than an actual fight. Disney tried to be like the OT and make the lightsabers much heavier, and slower like real sword fights. And it also has to do with the timeline, why would the sequels have fast choreography when the Jedi Order no longer exists, and tons of jedi knowledge were destroyed by the Empire. They had limited resources to learn with compared to Anakin, Obi Wan and the other prequel jedi.

Anakin vs Obi-Wan will always be the best for me.

I think emotional stakes are the main reason why the new duels seem to suck. The new lightsabers pose absolutely no threat whatsoever. There’s absolutely no risk of a character dying or getting maimed being the end result of a duel.

Personally i prefer the mustafar duel in revenge of the sith over duel of the fates. Qui gons death carries the duel for me made me cry every time

A lot of people say that Disney is reading fights because they’re using the lights like baseball bats. I personally don’t think that’s the problem because if you watch original trilogy, Luke uses his lightsaber on Darth Vader like three times like a baseball bat. I think the main issue is the lack of thought behind the fight in the lack of interest in the fighters.

I think Obi Wan was the best thing Disney has done with star wars, I liked the fights a lot in that show. Prequels take the cake of course.

Tbh I can't decide between Duel of the Fates & Obi-Wan Vs Anakin on Mustafar. Both had great music. Both had amazing choreography. And the emotional context?! I almost cried at the "you were my brother Anakin" moment.

my favorite duels are all the prequel duels. I do appreciate how the newer duels incorporate the lack of dueling knowledge the characters have, but besides that, they suck

Obi wan vs anakin is my favorite

It’s obvious to anyone who is over 30 why they changed. The opinion of the prequels has changed DRASTICALLY since the sequels came out. But for 15 years of my life, everyone shat on the prequels in a not too dissimilar way they do to the sequels. Don’t forget that the Phantom menace was one of the biggest disappointments in film history to Star Wars fans. Just watch Red Letter Medias plinket reviews to understand why. I was 9 when it came out so all of that went over my head. I personally loved it and didn’t notice how bad the acting was til Clones. When Disney bought Star Wars, most people actually were hoping Lucas wouldn’t be involved because there was still stigma to him due to the prequels. And Disney knew this and cut him off. And made a clear decision to basically pretend the prequels didn’t exist and make sure the sequels didn’t make the same mistakes. Which was a HUGE mistake. The prequels have so many problems, but most people loved the light saber fights. And those who watched them young loved some of the characters. Disney then. Purposefully strayed away from fast fighting style and more toward OG trilogy slow fighting style. The difference between the hate between the prequels and the sequels is, even though the prequels weren’t good “movies” they were still entertaining as hell. Especially to those 16 and under. Which is why love for them only grew. This will not happen with the sequel trilogy. I, an avid Star Wars fan, have still not re watched Rise of Skywalker, Solo or basically anything they’ve made. Disney forgot these were always meant to be movies for kids.

I feel like the lightsaber fights declining in quality the further you get from the prequels makes an odd amount of sense. They should be the best in the prequels... it was (in the context of the movies) the height of the Jedi Council with lots of Jedi out there training and dueling and even the Sith had proper training. That vanished in the original trilogy, with only Obi-Wan and Anakin still around with his training but... he is held back by his suit being junk (likely intentionally) and his body being, you know... half cremated already and Obi-Wan is old and slow, unable to utilize the skills he once had. Then they were both gone, leaving only Luke and his wildly incomplete training and complete lack of anyone to spar with the learn to use the lightsaber better. So of course Kylo and Ray will be like children playing with swords, not knowing how to use them properly so they use them more like glorified glowing bats because hey... it still works against non-lightsabers. I feel like it makes sense.

Ooff also Dath Maul had all the time in the world to slice Obi Wan while leaping out of the pit.

My theory about the departure from the superb choreography of the prequels is that they listened to the "fans". Those weirdos that complained the prequel fights are too flashy and "not how real sword fights work" and that instead of trying to hit each other, they're trying to hit each other's swords. Let's be honest. Those same fans that fantasized about lightsaber duels and wanted the toys to fight with their siblings and friends would do EXACTLY THAT. Hit each other's swords as stylishly as possible. I get the passion the fans have about Star Wars, but sometimes they can be really self-contradicting weirdos.

"Let the audience see the whole fight" is something Jackie Chan was always a fan of. He always preferred when we saw people get hit, he didn't like when a punch got thrown and then there was a cut until after the impact.

You don't see the whole fight because the actors don't know how to fight. This all started in Jason Bourne movies I think. The Jackie Chan version of full long shot fights were the originals.

Wanted to add that after watching the 12 hours phantom manace analysis I also realised that the choreography actually takes into account the different characteristics which in turn affect their fighting style. For example,Obi wan was seen to fight with more flair causing him to missed a few chance to hit Darth maul and lost his footing a few times. While Qui gon was always compose when he fights but to me personally as they haven’t really fought with any dark power before, he made a fatal misstep (possibly falling in to the Jedi fight routine and never expect dirty trick or maybe from exhaustion mentally and physically when fighting the dark force) and lost the fight. Darth maul however do not mind using tricks like countless kicks whenever he can to gain the upper hand.

In the Sequels, the characters showing fatigue while the fights dragged on was something I greatly appreciated. IRL, if you're fighting for longer than 1 or 2 minutes, you're 'out of gas' plain and simple. Problem was the techniques they were using did not appear physically draining in the slightest. I kept thinking to myself, "Bro, you're five moves in. Why do you look like you're gonna vomit already?". I'd say they have the right ingredients to make god-tier fight scenes, but they lack a choreographer with same passion we saw from Nic Gillard.

As an animator myself, the camera shake in the obiwan vs darth vader fight scene really pissed me off. It looks like a in post shake and a bad one. You can simply achieve a very realistic good camera shake by using plugin like redgiant. And the vfx team here decided just add a basic wiggle expression onto the attribution and think he/she did a good job.

As an adult with next to no friends and zero energy left to play video games after work, I can firmly proclaim I do not experience any of these problems. Lucky me

Best duel I think is Luke vs Vader in RoTJ just based on emotion alone

Music in a dual or fight is so important. It's why Duel of the Fates or the RWBY Red Trailer work so well! A fight can be described almost as a dance, with the music complimenting every swing of the blade or every gun shot!

Obi-Wan vs Darth Maul is also a fight of two champion tier fighters. It's high stakes even if they didn't have any sort of leadership impact. Meanwhile Kylo vs Rey is two rookies fighting. Even if they had the entire burden of humanity on their shoulders, it'd still feel weak, because they're unexperienced. At least a rookie character would show some desperation and emotion if they knew they were the last hope of humanity and had to fight...

Watching your video I suddenly noticed that during Obi-Wan's duel with Maul, when Obi-Wan is hanging in that shaft and is preparing to jump up to slice Maul, the theme of the Force is subtly playing in the background. Somehow I never noticed that before, and the way this theme complements this significant moment is simply beautiful.

They suck because the woke developers/directors care more about inclusivity than actual good content, its prwtty simple and obvious.

Prequel duels suck. A good sword fight is weighty, not fast and doing flips. If I can't feel the contact of the weapons hitting each other then you failed to get my attention. I prefer realistic over flashy. Something episodes 4-6 do the best but is very poorly portrayed in entertainment. I do have to admit the Usopp sword and Zoro having 6 arms are highlights of One Piece.

The emotional weight of Luke vs Vader makes it in my opinion the best Duel in StarWars
